DARLINGTON — College of Charleston coach Bobby Cremins has always been a little enamored with guards who can shoot.
With that in mind, it’s not too difficult to figure out how Darlington’s Jordan Scott popped up on his radar.
In a seemingly perfect match, the Falcons’ senior fulfilled a lifelong dream Wednesday by signing to play with the Division-I Cougars.
“It’s something I’ve always wanted, always dreamed about,” Scott said. “I’ve played basketball as long as I can remember, and to finally have all the hard work pay off is incredible.
“I’m glad I have this taken care of and don’t have to worry about it anymore. Now I can concentrate on my senior year.”
Scott averaged more than 18 points a game last year at Hartsville, and has averaged double figures every year of his high school career.
The shooting guard connected on more than 80 percent of his free throws and more than 50 percent of his 3-point shots.
“He’s a pure shooter, and he can hit from anywhere on the floor,” Darlington coach Ken Howle said. “College of Charleston, and especially coach Cremins, has had a history of producing good scoring guards, so I think it was good fit for both parties.”
At 6-foot-1, Howle said he isn’t sure if Cremins will use him as a point or shooting guard, but said Scott should be alright either way.
“I think Jordan has the ability to score from anywhere or drive to the basket if he needs to,” Howle said. “As long as he continues to work on his defense, coach Cremins should be able to find a place for him.”
Cremins’ success with guards was part of the reason Scott picked the Cougars over Wofford, UNC-Wilmington, Radford and a few other schools.
“Coach Cremins said he could work with me and really get me playing at a high level,” Scott said. “I also liked the school and the gym was really nice. I met some of the players and got along with them really well.”
As far as his senior season goes, Scott is adjusting to a new school and a team, but is optimistic about the Falcons’ chances.
“We’re working on chemistry right now,” Scott said. “That’s coming along and I’m picking up the system pretty well. Better every day.
“I think we have a great team that can go far in the playoffs. I excited for this season.”
Scott was one of three players signed by the Cougars on Wednesday:
- Trent Wiedeman, Georgia’s Class 2A Player of the Year, averaged 22.1 points and 10.9 rebounds for Greater Atlanta Christian School last season.
- James Carlton of South Central High in Winterville, N.C., averaged more than 11 points and 10 rebounds per game last year.
