The Coastal ladies were beating the 4th ranked team in the country with six minutes to go in the first half. But then North Carolina woke up.

Despite holding strong in the first half, the Coastal Carolina University women’s basketball team got their first loss of the season to the Heels, 88-49 on Wednesday at the Smith Center.

The Tar Heels jumped quickly to a 3-0 lead, but senior Devin Rivers put the Chanticleers on the board with a jumper. North Carolina’s She’la White then scored eight points to give the Tar Heels a 10-4 lead.

By breaking a tough full-court Carolina press, the Chants started a comeback. A Kendra Reynolds jumper put the Chanticleers down two, 19-17 with 8:56 left in the first stanza. After a Jessica Noll free throw, Amanda Stull scored lay-up a 6:10 left in the first half gave the Chanticleers their only lead of the game, 20-19 with 6:22 left in the first half.

The Tar Heels wouldn’t allow the Chanticleers lead to last long, as UNC closed the half on a 14-5 run to take an eight-point lead at the half, 33-25. DeGraffenreid scored 12 points in the half, going 4-for-6 from the field. The Tar Heels and Chanticleers both grabbed 21 rebounds and both teams forced 10 turnovers in the first half.

North Carolina took control of the game at the start of the second half, as with the score 40-29 the hosts scored 17 unanswered points over 5:25 to put the Chanticleers down 57-29 with just over 13 points to go in the game. Another 18-0 run late in the game sealed the win, as the Tar Heels held the Chants without a field goal for 9:43 until an Elizabeth Weaver three-pointer in the last seconds of the game.

The Tar Heels shot 50 percent from both the field and three-point range while holding the Chanticleers to 25.9 percent from field in the second half. UNC also outrebounded Coastal 33-14 in the second stanza.

Senior Elizabeth Weaver led the Chanticleers with a career-high 14 points, while junior Sydnei Moss grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds. North Carolina had four players in double figures. DeGraffenreid finished with the game-high 20 points, White finished with 16 points and Shegog followed with 16 points. Laura Broomfield capped the night off with a double-double scoring 12 points and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds.
