Coastal Carolina University's Rugby Club has been suspended through Dec. 31, 2009.
The suspension was issued this spring for violation of the University's alcohol policy.
The Rugby Club received a deferred suspension from the Student Government Association's Judicial Board that allowed the team to play out its season.
The club ultimately won the 2009 National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) Men's Collegiate Division III National Championship in late April.
Club sports are required to abide by the same policies as student organizations, including the alcohol and drug policy, which can be viewed at https://www.coastal.edu/judicialaffairs/alcoholpolicy.pdf.
"We are taking our alcohol policy seriously," said Haven Hart, associate vice president for student affairs. "In the past year we have strengthened our policy for individual students and campus organizations. We are enforcing these policies to address the issues of alcohol abuse and binge drinking both on and off our campus. It will not be tolerated. We have an educational opportunity to help our students understand the consequences of their actions."
In January 2010, the club will be eligible for reinstatement as a student organization.
