CCU to head to Chapel Hill for baseball regional

The Coastal Carolina University baseball team will travel to the University of North Carolina for the 2009 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional, it was announced Monday. Coastal Carolina and North Carolina will be joined by the University of Kansas and Dartmouth University in the four-team, double-elimination field.

The Coastal Carolina University baseball team will travel to the University of North Carolina for the 2009 NCAA Chapel Hill Regional, it was announced Monday. Coastal Carolina and North Carolina will be joined by the University of Kansas and Dartmouth University in the four-team, double-elimination field.

Coastal Carolina, the second seed, will face third-seeded Kansas Friday, May 29 at 2 p.m., at Boshamer Stadium. Kansas comes into the tournament with a 37-22 record and a 15-12 record in the Big 12 Conference. The Jayhawks are coming off an 8-4 loss to Baylor in the Big 12 Tournament. Tony Thompson leads KU with a .374 batting average, 19 home runs and 78 runs-batted-in. The pitching staff has a 4.36 earned-run average, with righthander T.J. Walz striking out 86 batters in 79.2 innings pitched.

North Carolina is the top seed in the regional and has a 42-16 overall record and a 19-10 record in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tar Heels are led by Dustin Ackley, who has a .399 batting average and 20 home runs. Adan Warren is 7-2 with a 3.46 ERA while Alex White also has seven wins on the season and 92 strikeouts in 85 innings.

Dartmouth comes into the Chapel Hill Regional with a 27-16 overall record and a 16-4 record in the Ivy League. The Big Green defeated Cornell in a three-game series to earn the League’s automatic berth. Nick Santomauro leads the Big Green with a .365 batting average, while Kyle Hendricks is 6-2 with a 4.14 ERA.

The winner of the Chapel Hill Regional will meet the winner of the Greenville, N.C., Regional in the NCAA Super Regionals.

North Carolina and Dartmouth will face off Friday at 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday’s games are at 1 p.m., and 5 p.m., with an if necessary game Monday night at 6 p.m.
