DURHAM, N.C. — Nate Frieman’s school-record 43rd home run started a six-run sixth inning that carried Duke past Clemson 10-4 on Friday in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
Alex Hassan had a two-run single and Jake Lemmerman added a run-scoring triple during the burst for the seventh-seeded Blue Devils (35-23), who eliminated the Tigers (39-19) from contention for Sunday’s championship game.
Clemson will wrap up the tournament today when it plays North Carolina today at 4 p.m.
Duke starter Andrew Wolcott (8-3) pitched 7 1/3 effective innings to earn the win. The right-hander allowed nine hits, four runs (two earned) and three walks with four strikeouts. Michael Ness pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts to close out the game.
Tiger starter Chris Dwyer (4-5) suffered the loss as he yielded six hits, five earned runs awith four strikeouts in five innings.
Mike Freeman, Paulsen, and Wilson Boyd had two hits apiece for the Tigers, who were 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
