Socastee High School has a history of sending softball players to USC-Salkehatchie. Add Crystal Long to that long list.
Wednesday Long signed with the Indians in front of family, coaches and friends. A shortstop the last three years for Steve Hodge's team, Long is expected to play middle infield for Salk. She batted .422 this year, but Socastee failed to make the playoffs.
Former teammates of Long, Cea Knox and Daphne Hall, have attended USC-Salk and Long said that was an important factor for Long. "They're a big deal at Socastee, so it's cool to be following in their footsteps," Long said.
Indians coach Mitch Smith, attended the signing at Socastee High School. "She's a great kid," said Smith. "Very athletic, she works hard, she'll play a little third, a little middle infield. That's exactly what we're looking for."
"I've been wanting to play college ball since I was seven," said Long. "So it's a pretty big deal that I was able to sign with this school today."
