Young Lady Foxes finish strong season

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Hartsville High softball team fielded a fairly young team this year with only two seniors on the team. The season ended on Monday with a 4-2 loss to Wando.

The Lady Foxes began the district playoffs with a 3-1 win over Wando on Thursday night.

They hosted Irmo on Saturday afternoon in Hartsville. After the game stayed knotted at zero for five innings, the Lady Foxes made a comeback to tie the game at three and go to an extra inning. However, Irmo scored two runs in the top of the eighth, and Hartsville fell 5-3.

Skylar Pate and Jordan Bizzell led the Lady Foxes at the plate. Pate was 2-for-4, and Bizzell finished 2-for-2 with a double.

The loss set up a rematch with Wando.

The Lady Foxes lost 4-2 in a game in which they only managed two hits. Rebecca Parker’s 2-for-3 performance notched the only hits for Hartsville.
Hartsville committed four errors that led to all four Wando runs.

Hartsville head coach Bobby Sowell said the goal for the season was high. “I don’t think as a coach you can ever be satisfied unless you win the state championship,” he said, “but you can be pleased with the growth and development of the team.”

Sowell said replacing four players from the 2008 team seemed to be a monumental task before the season began, but some of the younger players stepped up this season.
Hartsville fielded a team that on many nights would have three seventh graders and three freshman in the line up,” Sowell said. “We were able to compete and gave ourselves a chance to win every time we took the field.”

The coach also said seniors Parker and Meredith Johnson may be leaving, but their mark is on the program. “Speaking for the entire team,” Sowell said, “we will miss you and good luck.”

Sowell also said next year’s team is in the capable hands of rising seniors Pate, Meredith Carpenter and Lanie Brisbon. “Based on the experience we have gained and the talent these ladies have,” Sowell said, “I think the future for Hartsville High softball is bright.”

The team finished with a 16-11 record for the season.
