In his first year as Darlington softball coach team, Tim Wiley was able to guide the Falcons to the Class 3A state title, the first for the school in any sport since consolidation.
Now he prepares for his encore with several big pieces missing.
“We had a veteran ball team last year and a team that had a lot of experience,” Wiley said. “That’s the biggest thing we’re missing. But I think we have the talent to be in the hunt at the end.”
The one big missing piece is Morning News player of the year Stacy Weatherford, who was on the mound for 24 of the Falcons’ 32 wins last season. Weatherford struck out 255 batters in 164 1/3 innings while posting a 0.64 earned run average.
“She was a big part of team,” Wiley said of Weatherford. “She had been in a lot of tight ball games and was a leader on the field. We’ve got a freshman and sophomore who are now going to step into that starting pitcher’s spot.”
Pitchers Sarah Hardee and Sheridan Matthews have playing experience for the Falcons, and Wiley expects them both to become key starters in
the rotation.
