No running back in the Pee Dee finished last season with more yards than Marlboro County’s Tyreek Townsend.
Now he’ll get the chance to shine at the next level after signing with Johnson C. Smith University, a Division II school in Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday.
Townsend rushed for 1,536 yards on 210 carriers with 12 touchdowns in the regular season. He finished with close to 2,400 by the end of the Bulldogs’ Class 3A lower state title game loss to Myrtle Beach.
“I really believe Johnson C. Smith is getting a steal,” Marlboro County coach Dean Boyd said.
“He was a really big part of our team this year and wound up with the most yardage of any running back in the state.
“His work ethic and his athleticism and quickness make him such a tough back to bring down. I really think he’s going to do very well at the next level.”
