COLUMBIA — As the final seconds ticked down in the Class 2A girls lower state title game, Marion coach Leon Sturkey could only think of one thing.
“Relief,” Sturkey said.
That’s because he just witnessed the Swamp Foxes advance to their first girls state title game following a 53-36 win over Silver Bluff on Saturday at Richland Northeast.
Marion will face Pendleton in the Class 2A title game Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
“It was very emotional and feeling you really can’t describe,” Sturkey said. “We have played through adversity and these girls have done everything we have asked them to do.
“We have accomplished a lot of things hopefully we could accomplish one more.”
Geneika Brantley came up with another big game for the Swamp Foxes despite getting in foul trouble. She scored a game-high 24 points and had 18 boards and seven blocks despite sitting on the bench for some of the second quarter after she picked up her third foul.
Brantley, however never picked up her fourth foul and played the rest of the game.
“She just had a great game,” Sturkey said.
Candace Wright added 14 points for Marion, which led 25-23 at halftime.
The Swamp Foxes turned up the defensive pressure in the second half holding Silver Bluff to just 13 second-half points and pulled away at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
“We just tried to keep coming at them,” Sturkey said. “We knew they only had seven players and we just wanted to keep the pressure on them.”
Kaylin Foreman led Silver Bluff with 16 points.
