FLORENCE — The Wilmington Sharks defeated the Florence RedWolves 10-7 in a rain-shortened Coastal Plain League game at Legion Field on Wednesday night.
After the RedWolves put runners on second and third and the tying run at the plate with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, the game was delayed an hour and 15 minutes before being declared a Wilmington win.
By league rules, the game could not be suspended and concluded at a later date.
“The conditions weren’t going to get any better, so they called it,” said RedWolves general manager Jamie Young. “A couple places on the field were real wet and there was still some lightning around.
We couldn’t have gotten things ready in time to go again.”
The game was marred by 10 errors, seven by Wilmington and three by Florence.
Wilmington scored six runs in the third off Florence starter Todd Miller to grab an 8-3 lead. Adam Eggemeyer’s three-run homer to right was the big blow.
Eggemeyer finished 2-for-4 to raise his league-leading average to .451 (23-for-51). He now has three homers, including two in each of Wilmington’s visits to Legion Field.
Miller (0-1) lasted three innings. He gave up 11 hits, eight runs (seven earned), walked one and struck out two.
Wilmington starter Ryan Harper (1-1) went five innings, gave up seven hits, six runs (two earned), walked four and struck out three.
Zach Caldwell, Barrett Kleinknecht and Austin Smetana each had two hits for Florence.
The RedWolves remain a game back of Wilson in the CPL South standings. They travel to Wilmington tonight at 7 before hosting Wilson on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
