RedWolves fall out of first place

WILSON, N.C. — The Wilson Tobs scored three runs in the second inning off Florence starter Brad Raj and held off a late rally to defeat the RedWolves 3-2 in Coastal Plain League play on Tuesday night.

The win keeps Wilson atop the CPL South standings at 8-4 while the RedWolves drop to second at 7-5.

Trailing 3-2 in the seventh, the RedWolves put runners at first and second on singles from Curtis Murphy and Sam DiMatteo.

The rally was snuffed out, though, when Murphy was picked off at second by Wilson reliever Jerris Springfield and DiMatteo was picked off at first by Wilson catcher Dale Cornstubble.

“We got caught sleeping,” said Florence coach Wes Davis, whose RedWolves have lost five of their last seven games. “The problem we’re having as a whole team right now is we’re not bringing all aspects of the game every night.

“Whether it’s not hitting the ball when we need to, fielding the ball when we need to, bad base running or whatever, we’re finding ways to put ourselves out of games.”

Florence pulled within 3-2 in the sixth on a two-run homer to right from Stephen McCray.

In taking the loss, Raj (0-1) lasted six innings, gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out three. Wilson’s three runs were earned.

Barrett Kleinknecht held Wilson scoreless in the seventh and eighth. He gave up one hit and struck out one.

The RedWolves host the Wilmington Sharks tonight at 7:30 at Legion Field.
