A handful of local golfers were just one great day of golf away from playing in the US Open. But none of them were able to have that magical day that could have sent them to Bethpage Black.
The largest group of would-be qualifiers came out of Memphis. But Bishopville native Tommy "Two-Gloves" Gainey was not able to reach the magic number of 137 over two rounds. Gainey shot a 70-76 to miss the mark by nine strokes. Also in Memphis, North Myrtle Beach native Tony Parrish shot a 73-70, to miss by six strokes.
Three CCU players made it to sectionals, but did not have good enough days on Monday. Dan Obremski shot a 140, Cameron Hooper shot a 147 and Zack Byrd shot a 148.
At the Dayton location, Bennettsville native Scott Usher came up a little short. He had to hit 136, and had a chance after shooting a 69 in his morning round. But he shot a 73 in his afternoon round to fall six strokes short.
It was not all doom and gloom for South Carolina natives - Clemson products Lucas Glover and Kyle Stanley qualified.
