Nick McCully hopes he's made his last pitch for Coastal Carolina. Not that he didn't love his three year pitching for the black and teal, but if he's back with the Chanticleers, that means that this week's Major League Baseball First Year Players draft was a total disappointment.
Teams have told McCully that he could go anywhere from the 3rd to the 15th round in the draft, which starts Tuesday night at 6pm. The Florida native says a "handful" of teams have contacted him since CCU's season ended, while others have talked to him throughout the season. While he'd play for anyone, McCully says it would be fun for him to get drafted by the Rangers, his favorite team, or the Rays, the team by his hometown.
McCully was not drafted out of high school in Florida, he missed much of his senior year of high school with an injury.
McCully was one of the best starting pitchers in the Big South in 2008, and he was the preseason pitcher of the year in the Big South in 2009. But he pitched most of the year as the team's closer before switching roles with Bobby Gagg for the last two months of the season. McCully started CCU's only regional victory, an 11-3 win over Kansas.
McCully is not the only CCU junior who may get drafted this week. Catcher Jose Iglesias, pitcher Austin Fleet and outfielder Adam Rice have a chance to hear their name called.
Seniors David Anderson and Tyler Bortnick also expect to be drafted.
