WILSON, N.C. — Matt Johns’ RBI single in the bottom of the fifth was the difference as Wilson defeated Florence 1-0 on Friday in Coastal Plain League action.
The loss over shadowed a strong pitching performance by Florence’s Matt Jebb.
Jebb (1-1) allowed an unearned run in eight innings of work. He gave up just two hits and walked one while striking out three.
“I was proud of how Jebb threw,” Florence coach Wes Davis said. “He was solid all night long. He definitely deserved a better outcome.”
Trent Howard and three Wilson pitchers combined for the shutout. Howard (2-0) struck out eight and allowed four hits in the victory.
Florence had its share of chances, stranding 11 men. Most of the opportunities ended with RedWolves’ strikeouts.
“It’s definitely disappointing,” Davis said. “We didn’t get the hit when we needed to.”
Catcher Richard Pirkle led Florence (5-2) with two hits.
The RedWolves will host Wilmington tonight at 7:30 p.m.
