Wednesday was a busy day for the Braves, and a busy day for players who used to play for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans.
First, 43 year old Tom Glavine, who made a rehab stint in Myrtle Beach last year, was cut by the Braves. The team announced they did not feel that Glavine was at a point in which he could be effective in the majors. He had three minor league starts, and did not give up a run in his last appearance. Glavine did not announce whether or not he would retire.
While a legend's career with the Braves is over, another is just beginning. Pitcher Tommy Hanson got the call up to the Braves and will make his first major league start on Saturday. Hanson started the season with the Pelicans last year and moved up to double A in less than two months. Hanson almost made the big club right after spring training, but Atlanta decided to keep him in Gwinnett for the first few months of the year.
Three former Pelicans are also leaving the organization, after the Braves dealt them to Pittsburgh for All-Star outfielder Nate McLouth. Gorkys Hernandez, Charlie Morton and Jeff Locke are all on their way to the Pirates.
Meanwhile, the Pelicans were rained out Wednesday night in Winston-Salem.
