The record books at Hartsville High School changed several times during the 2009 track and field season, but notably, it changed in the high jump.
Senior Cameron Evans cleared 6 feet and 11 inches in the high jump. However, the location of the jump was as impressive as the height.
The final jump won Evans and Hartsville High a gold medal at the State Track Meet.
Evans said he was confident at the meet. "I knew I was going to win because I jumped with the same guys the Saturday before (at the Lower State Meet)," Evans said.
The contestants began at six feet and increased in two-inch increments.
Evans was alone in the competition by the time the contestants reached 6 feet and 6 inches.
Evans continued to jump after he had won the contest. "I was feeling pretty confident," he said, "but I never knew I would get 6 feet and 11 inches.
"It feels good to represent my school and family," he said of the gold medal. "I accomplished something no one else could do."
Evans said he plans to join the Air National Guard after graduation and hopes to continue his track and field career in college.
Evans was the first track gold medalist for Hartsville High since 2003.
