Neff helps RedWolves beat Blowfish

COLUMBIA — Steven Neff shut out Columbia over the final 4 2/3 innings Wednesday night and helped the Florence RedWolves hold off the Columbia Blowfish 7-4 in Coastal Plain League baseball.

Neff surrendered just two hits, walked none and struck out four to earn his first win of the season in four decisions.

Neff came in in relief of starter Patrick Dolan, who gave up four runs — three earned — in 4 1/3 innings.

“We hadn’t gotten (Neff) as many innings as we’d like to get him,” Florence coach Wes Davis said. “He came in and started out well and really got better as the game progressed.”

Sam DiMatteo was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI and Mickie Lugbauer hit a two-run homer in the RedWolves’ three-run third inning as the ’Wolves took a 4-2 lead.

In the fourth, Herman Petzold walked, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on Drew Haynes’ single to center to make it 5-2.

Columbia climbed to within one at 5-4 i the bottom of the inning, getting two runs on John Long’s two-run homer.

Florence, though, got single runs in the sixth and seventh innings on Haynes RBI infield single and Lugbauer’s RBI double, respectively.

The RedWolves play at Wilmington at 7:05 tonight.
