CARTHAGE, N.C. — South Carolina rising senior Paul Woodbury tied for medalist honors in sectional qualifying Tuesday to advance to the United States Amateur Championship.
Woodbury, a Lake City native, fired rounds of 67 and 70 at at Little River Golf Club in Carthage, N.C., to for first place at 7-under with Ben Kohles.
It’s the second year Woodbury has qualified for the U.S. Amateur.
Woodbury played in three tournaments for the Gamecocks during the 2008-09 season and carded a hole-in-one en route to earning medalist honors at the Rees Jones Intercollegiate in November along with teammate Wesley Bryan.
The U.S. Amateur will take place Aug. 24-30 at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., Aug. 24-30.
In other U.S. Amateur qualifying, Coker’s Chris Marsh and Lake City’s Tripp McAllister came up just short in their efforts at Columbia Country Club in Blythewood.
Marsh finished at 4-under and was named as an alternate.
McAllister finished 1-under, three shots back of the final qualifying spot.
