Hudson gets loss as Pelicans fall to Rocks

Tim Hudson's second rehab start was not as strong as his first, and he was saddled with the loss in the Pelicans 5-3 defeat at the hands of Wilmington Thursday night.

After only allowing one runner to reach through the first two, Hudson allowed three of the first four men to reach base in the third inning. RBI singles by Johnny Giavotella and Clint Robinson sandwiched around a Mike Moustakas RBI groundout gave the Blue Rocks an early 3-0 lead and chased the two-time big league all-star with two gone in the third. Hudson (0-1) allowed three runs, all earned, on five hits, walking and striking out one over his two and two-thirds. Wilmington added a pair of runs in the fifth on a Moustakas RBI triple and a Robinson RBI single.

The Pelicans were unable to capitalize on four Wilmington errors on the night. Myrtle Beach got on the board with a single run in the fourth on an RBI single by Chris Shehan and added another on a bizarre play in the fifth. With two out and the bases empty, Miles bunted, and Wilmington starter Danny Duffy’s throw to first was wide, sailing down the right field line. Blue Rocks right fielder Nick Van Stratten misplayed the ball in foul ground, allowing Miles to head to third, and Van Stratten’s throw there caromed off Wilmington third baseman Moustakas to the front of the visitors’ dugout. Miles popped out of his slide and bolted for the plate, beating a flip from Duffy, to score. Duffy and Van Stratten were each assessed an error on the play with Miles credited with a single and a run scored. Myrtle Beach got its only other run on a Robert Marcial solo homer with two gone in the bottom of the seventh. Duffy (8-3) went six and two-thirds and allowed two runs—one earned—on five hits, striking out five and walking one.

Myrtle Beach hits the road for a six-game trip starting tomorrow with three against the Winston-Salem Dash. Following a three-game set with the Potomac Nationals next week, the Pelicans return home to host the Kinston Indians for a four-game series from July 30 through August 2.
