Four errors doom the Pelicans against the Dash Monday night as Winston-Salem took the finale and the three-game series by way of a 7-3 victory. The loss dropped the Pelicans another half-game behind idle Salem in the Carolina League Southern Division.
Pelicans starter Erik Cordier worked with traffic on the basepaths almost from the get-go. A one-out double by Francis Marion product Justin Greene in the first got the offensive evening rolling for Winston-Salem. The Dash plated three runs with two gone in the first, helped along by a pair of first-inning Myrtle Beach errors. After striking out the side in the second, Cordier again ran into issues in the third, surrendering three more runs in an inning that included another Pelicans blunder. The big blow in the third came on a two-run Salvador Sanchez homer. Cordier (4-4) exited after two and two-thirds having allowed seven runs on five hits, though just four of the runs were earned.
The Pelicans’ offense quite literally scattered nine hits throughout the lineup with Donell Linares the only Myrtle Beach player to not break into the hit column on the night. Already in a 7-0 hole, the Birds got a run in the third when C.J. Lee doubled with one out and came around to score on a Cole Miles RBI single. In the fifth, the Pelicans took advantage of shaky defense by the Dash, putting Jesus Sucre on base via error, moving him to third on another throwing miscue on a Robert Marcial bunt single, and plating both men later in the frame. It was as close as the home club would get. Dash starter Johnnie Lowe (7-4) allowed all three runs, just one earned, on eight hits over seven innings.
Myrtle Beach’s bullpen combined to throw six and a third innings of shutout, one-hit ball in relief of Cordier. Craig Kimbrel tossed three of those frames, faced ten hitters, walked one and struck out seven, a season high for any Myrtle Beach reliever.
Tomorrow night, the Pelicans open a three-game series with the Wilmington Blue Rocks at BB&T Coastal Field. Atlanta Braves right-hander Tim Hudson, fresh off his first rehab start since 2008 “Tommy John” surgery, will sign autographs on the field from 5:30 to 6:00 prior to the contest. Hudson will make his second start of the year in Thursday evening’s series finale with the Wilmington Blue Rocks as he continues his road back to the big leagues.
