During the course of the regular season, Marion Post 5 and Mullins Post 89 Junior Legion baseball teams have met four times. Each game turned out to be pretty entertaining for fans with a couple of games being decided by a run or two and Marion won the first three meetings. However, Mullins ended the regular season with a victory by a score of 8-5 at home, coming up just a game shy of earning a playoff bid, but Marion holds on for a second place finish and more good news on the horizon.
After two scoreless innings, pitcher Cole Rogers, in a complete game victory helped his Mullins squad get the early jump on the scoreboard. Thanks to a stand-up double from Adam Jacobs, Post 89 took a 1-0 lead off the RBI. Marion’s Ira Lee tied the game with a run scored of his own after leading off the inning with a hit.
Seth Allen’s lead off single in the bottom of the third inning began a rally for Mullins as they quickly loaded the bases. Kody Stephens added more runs during the inning, slugger Dalton Rogers provided the early fireworks with a solo home run and Will Daniels scored from first base off another RBI double from Jacobs, giving Post 89 a 6-1 advantage.
An RBI double from Cole Rogers along with a run scored by Allen gave Mullins an 8-2 lead in the fourth inning. However, Marion continued to chip away at the lead late in the game, but Stephens pulled off the victory with a save.
Mullins coach Donnie Hill told his kids he appreciated what they’ve done on the season and to keep working toward their dreams. “They had a big reason not to play, but they came out to show they can play, it’s a big confidence boost,” Hill said, adding that he looks forward to having at least nine players returning next summer. Pitching for Post 89 was a highlight for the team he said, adding that the squad was sharp on defense. Mullins were winners of nine games on the year.
Marion coach Chris Drose and his Post 5 squad will host the State tournament at Fox Field starting July 22-26. “A lot of baseball is going to be played with four games on the first day,” Drose said, adding that Marion will have an automatic bid in the tourney. Post 5 will host Bishopville today at 7 p.m.
“We going to recommit and get back down to business,” Drose said, adding that the squad started out great with seven victories to start the season, but injuries have hampered the team. Starting catcher Justin Elvis and infielder Austin Newell are just few players he hoped to have back at 100 percent this week.
