The Lake City High School boys basketball team swept a pair of Region VII-3A games against Georgetown and Socastee last week to remain at the top of the region standings at 4-0 and 12-7 overall.

On Saturday, the Panthers took an early eight-point lead against Socastee, but a second-period scoring surge by the Braves cut Lake City’s lead to 25-23 at the half. The Panthers outscored Socastee 15-8 in the third period and rolled to a 57-43 win.

Jeremi’ McCrea led Lake City scorers with 12, while Martin Cooper scored 11, including three three-point field goals. Shonquez Nelson added eight points for the Panthers.

Earlier in the week, Lake City notched a 65-58 win against Georgetown with a 15-point scoring effort by point guard Desmond Haygood. Dashawn Butler scored 12 for the Panthers, followed by Corey Baker with nine and McCrea with eight.

The Panthers on Friday night will play host to the defending 3A state champions, the Myrtle Beach Seahawks.

The Lake City High School’s girls’ basketball team held off a late scoring run by Socastee to take a 42-40 Region VII-3A win Saturday and move into second place in the region standings.

The Lady Panthers held a slim two-point lead at the end of the first quarter, but Socastee outscored Lake City in the second quarter to tie the game 20-20 at the half. The Lady Panthers led for most of the second half until the Lady Braves took a two-point lead with 3:43 remaining. With the scored tied 38-38, Sherina Singletary scored two of her eight points on a putback after a missed Lake City shot to give the Lady Panthers the lead for good.

Alisha Graham led Lake City with 16 points and Shanice Cooper added 10.

Lake City also gained a region win Friday night with a 47-35 victory over Georgetown. The Lady Panthers held Georgetown to scoring in single digits in three of the game’s four quarters. Graham again led Lake City scorers with 14, and Cooper scored 12.

Lake City improved their region record to 3-1 and 6-11 overall. The Lady Panthers will play host to Myrtle Beach on Friday night in another region game.
