Keneisha Whittington, a Mullins High School athlete with such awards to her credit as being named the 2008 and 2009 MVP, All Region, All State, North/ South Nominee, is expected to sign with Columbia College in the spring.
She was accepted to the school on Nov. 10 and met the coach and team in December.
"Keneisha will be the first girl in MHS history to sign a tennis scholarship," coach Rosemary Herring said.
Whittington began playing varsity tennis as a freshman and was Herring told her that if she worked hard, getting a scholarship was possible, she said. She is also a member of the BETA club and Art Honor Society, along with being a captain on the softball team.
Her plans are to graduate with a biology degree with a certification to teach, Whittinton said, adding that she wants to be a physical therapist.
"But with the certification to teach, I could come back to MHS and take over for Ms. Herring on the courts," she said. She said she is grateful to her coach for helping her develop as a player and for heading her to the next level.
"I was proud that I was the first, but I know that as long as MHS keeps Coach Herring, I won't be the last. She told me the first time I played that if i would give it my all, I could be the first because she saw a natural ability. I hope more people get involved and hopefully we can make tennis just as big as basketball in Mullins."
