After splitting their first two games of the post-Christmas girl’s basketball tournament at South Florence High School during the Christmas break, Pee Dee was placed into the fifth-place game versus Dillon High School.
This was an opponent, again, that the Golden Eagles had faced in recent years and knew a little about. But, whatever they knew about solving the Wildcat defense did not help much in the first quarter.
The only points Pee Dee could muster were a Katelyn Browne bucket down low as they trailed 6-2 after one. In the second frame, Katherine Rogers found the touch, connecting on an outside jumper and netting another pair inside the circle. With the pick-up in offense, the Golden Eagles forged in front 13-12 as the two teams headed for the locker room.
The third quarter continued the defensive sloppy play as it took four minutes for Pee Dee to get back on the board. A fall-away by Browne high off of the glass brought the Golden Eagles back within one. A putback by Browne, then a driving hoop by C.C. Causey plus the contact tied the game at 19. However, the contact also sent Causey to the bench with a hand injury.
Pee Dee struggled to recover at first without their fallen starter, but a Brittany Ellis leaner in the lane got them back within a pair at the third quarter buzzer. And, back and forth they went. A second half that featured seven ties went down to the final minute, but the Golden Eagles were never able to break through and take the lead. A full-court dash for a left-handed lay-in by Kelsey Dozier made the last
tie at 31 with just over a minute to play.
But, the Wildcats would take the lead on free throws and hang on for the 34-31 win.
The loss drops Pee Dee to 9-3 on the year. This Friday, they will travel to Williamsburg for a region contest with the Williamsburg Academy Stallions at 6:30 p.m.
Then, they will face a rare Saturday match-up, again on the road, against region rival Byrnes Schools. Saturdays games are scheduled for approximately 5:30 p.m.
