Organizers with the Beach Ball Classic are bringing another basketball showcase to the Grand Strand, right in the middle of March Madness.
Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes announced Wednesday the region would hose this year's Carolinas All-Star Basketball Classic March 19-21.
The weekend cranks up on Thursday night, March 19, with an awards banquet. The all-star games include boys and girls teams of 10 players each from North and South Carolina.
The next night, Friday, March 20th, there will be a 3-point shot contest and a slam dunk contest for competitors at Myrtle Beach High School.
The weekend culminates with the all-star games, Saturday, March 21, at Socastee High School.
Principals from both high schools joined Rhodes and other Beach Ball officials for the announcement.
"It's something (the players) can take with them forever," said Socastee Boys Basketball Coach Tommy Johnson, who will coach the boys team. "It won't end this year. They will forever remember playing against the best from North Carolina, and it gives each high school a sense of pride and each community a sense of pride knowing one of their own has made it to this game."
The only local player to be selected for the boys team was Shahmel Brackett from Wilson High School in Florence.
The girls team from South Carolina features Lakeitha Alston and Danielle Hennessey from Carolina Forest High School, Icey and Kierra Patterson from Darlington High School, and Whitley Smith from Lee Central High School in Bishopville.
