Mullins Head Coach Mark Gerald said he could see his team playing a little uptight in their first round playoff game against Manning. “It was a good game for us … they fought back and got in it and we had to play tough,” he said. The Aucs were up by as much as 22 points, but the Monarchs fought back in the second half, cutting the deficit down to eight points. “I don’t think we played as quite as good as we could play, but we got focused and pulled it out,” Gerald said, adding that he was pleased with the win.
Donte Cooper continues to elevate his game, registering double figures in scoring and rebounding in his last seven games. Cooper led the squad with 18 points and 14 rebounds, in a 75-60 victory at home.
Mullins broke out to a 14-2 in the first four minutes of the game, highlighted by a two-handed dunk from Cooper for the first score of the game. Senior forward Seqwan McFarland and junior point guard Eric Smith both scored seven points in the opening quarter.
McFarland got off to a hot start with 13 of his 17 points scored in the first half. The Aucs took a 40-22 lead into halftime, and appeared to be rolling.
However, the Monarchs rallied with a 10-1 run to open the second half, and later found themselves down 56-47 at the 5:23 mark in the fourth quarter.
Smith finished with 12 points and seven assists for Mullins, while Darnell Coleman also added 12 points, along with five points from Greg Nelson.
Mullins improve their record to 20-3 and will host Silver Bluff on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Auctioneer shooting guard Stacy Wilson and the squad await their second round opponent Silver Bluff after knocking off Manning in the first round 75-60.
