Coach Leon Sturkey and the Lady Swamp Foxes are off to a great start playing at home in the playoffs, knocking off first round opponent Hanahan by a score of 86-69.
“The best part of it, is the win in the opening round,” Sturkey said, adding that the team has to do better taking care of the basketball because of 12 turnovers in the first half.
Five players scored in double figures, highlighted by a dominant performance from the Marion front line. Geneika Brantley almost registered a triple double with 14 points, 17 rebounds, and nine blocks. In fact, Brantley had already pulled down 12 rebounds and returned eight shots to sender before halftime.
The Lady Foxes got off to a great start in the opening quarter with a 23-10 run, highlighted by the play of point guard Jessica Grant, who dished off three of her game high seven assist in the quarter.
Marion was up big with a 50-31 halftime advantage because of the team’s ability to limit their opponents shot attempts and attack in transition.
“Our kids came out with some intensity and overall I think we played well,” he said against a well-coached basketball team in Hanahan.
Shaquita Taylor led the Lady Foxes with 24 points, while Candace Wright provided major production with 20 points and 18 rebounds in a battle against cold symptoms and her opponent. The team held a twenty point lead after Amira Timmons nailed a three pointer at the buzzer to end the third quarter, with the Lady Foxes ahead 68-48. Taylor caught fire in the final period with nine points as Marion increased their advantage with a 73-50 score at the 6:27 mark.
Amber Timmons added 11 points for the Lady Foxes along with 10 points from Grant. Tanisha Bethel led the Lady Hawks with 25 points along with 23 points from Shakema Gilliard.
Marion will now host Wade Hampton Friday at 7 p.m.
