Francis Marion men's soccer team garners sportsmanship award

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Peach Belt Conference recently announced the recipients of the PBC Team Sportsmanship Awards for the five conference-sponsored fall sports, and for the second consecutive year the Francis Marion men’s soccer team earned the honor.

The program, which includes honoring one team from each of the league’s 12 championship sports, will also recognize one institution with the “Institution of the Year Sportsmanship Award” at the end of the 2009-10 year, an award FMU won for 2008-09.

The program presents an award following each championship season to the team in that sport that best exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship and generally conducts themselves with a high degree of integrity, character and class. The team award is selected by other teams who compete in that sport.

Under the guidance of third-year head coach Kevin Varnado, the Patriot men posted an 11-5-3 record this past season and finished fifth during the PBC regular-season.

FMU lost a narrow overtime decision in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament. The Patriots tied for fewest goals allowed by a team in the Peach Belt, with opponents tallying only 17 scores in the 19 matches — a figure that ranked 25th nationally.
