Florence Tennis Association will be well represented for the next two years at the state level. On Dec. 13, during the United States Tennis Association South Carolina Annual Meeting at Myrtle Beach, eight local stalwarts were selected to fill volunteer USTA SC positions for the 2010-11 term.
Ernie James will be a member of the Community Development and Communications and Marketing Committees, Barbara Canelon will serve on the Community Development Committee, and Rose Manelli and Mario Canelon will be on the Diversity Committee. In addition, two local tennis professionals were appointed to committee roles — Larry Rizzo with the Awards Committee and Archie Smith to the League Council. Paul Pittman, who was elected USTA SC President, will be chairman of the Board of Directors, while Ed Sprenger, who will be one of the organization’s Vice Presidents, will serve on the Board as well as on a number of committees.
The USTA SC is affiliated with the United States Tennis Association and represents over 24,000 USTA members in South Carolina. In keeping with its mission of growing the game of tennis, the USTA SC conducts adult and junior leagues, sponsors youth tennis programs, sanctions tournaments, and provides guidance, technical assistance and support to local tennis organizations throughout the state.
During the Annual meeting of the South Carolina Tennis Patrons Foundation, which was also held on December 13, Ernie James and Paul Pittman were elected to the SCTPF Board of Directors. The SCTPF is a non-profit organization created to educate the public about the sport of tennis, promote the principles of good sportsmanship and fair play, and provide grants and scholarships to deserving junior players. The Foundation also maintains the South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame Museum in Belton as a means of educating the public about the achievements of prominent South Carolinians in the sport.
