There are a lot of things that go into winning a championship - among them are hard work, talent, heart, toughness and, of course, luck. But three Eastern Carolina teams are showing that luck might not have that much to do with it.
Central, Dillon and Myrtle Beach all met in Columbia today at South Carolina High School League offices, along with the other teams that will be vying for state championships this Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium. For all three teams, they're back in the same position they were last year.
Dillon beat Central 7-6 for the AA state championship last year, while Myrtle Beach was triumphant over Chester for the AAA crown.
Some things have changed in a year - the game will be at Williams-Brice instead of Death Valley. For Myrtle Beach, they have a new coach in Mickey Wilson. Central graduated almost their entire offense last year. And instead of going for its first title in half a century, Dillon is trying to go back-to-back for the first time ever.
And they aren't the only local teams who've gone this far - Chesterfield threepeated as Class A Division 1 champions. And Dillon Christian has back-to-back SCISA Class A titles.
Saturday at Williams-Brice, Central plays Dillon at 3pm. The Seahawks will play Clinton in a rematch of the 1983 State Championship game at 6pm.
So 2009 is a weird year for Eastern Carolina teams, and it just goes to show you that sometimes it can be easier to do something, when you've all ready done it.
