JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn — Led by sophomore Ashlee Crook, FMU split its two matches on at the season-opening Chick-fil-A Volleyball Tournament, hosted by Carson-Newman College.
Facing a pair of squads that both went to the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2008, FMU defeated Lincoln Memorial University 25-15, 26-28, 25-18, 25-14, before losing to the host school 20-25, 25-15, 25-20, 26-24.
FMU (1-1) will play two matches on today at noon against Lees-McRae College and at 4 p.m. against Davis & Elkins College.
In the season-opening win over LMU, Crook led the way with 10 kills and 23 digs, while two Patriots — junior Mallory Eggert and freshman Liz Drewry — had nine kills. Crook served three aces, while Eggert also had seven blocks. Sophomore Hallie Legg and senior Jess O’Leary shared the setting duties and registered 20 and 19 assists respectively.
In the nightcap loss, Crook compiled nine kills and 10 digs, while sophomore Amanda Mitchell had seven kills. Junior libero Kelsie Deaton dug up 13 balls. O'Leary handed out 13 assists, while Legg tallied 10 helpers.
