BUIES CREEK, N.C.Hanna Salmen scored just 14 seconds into the match and Campbell University led FMU University 2-0 at halftime en route to a 2-1 women's soccer win on Friday in the season opener for both teams.
The loss spoiled the coaching debut of FMU head coach Joel Person. The Patriots will play their home opener on Sunday at noon when they entertain Navy.
Salmen's quick score ended a Patriot defensive scoreless streak that was at 364:58 entering the 2009 campaign.
Campbell’s Olga Ekblom doubled the margin in the 25th minute off a pass from Ashley Wagner. Anna Gibney had assists on both goals for the Camels.
FMU sophomore forward Amanda Hall cut the gap to 2-1 with an unassisted goal only 16 seconds into the second stanza. However, the Patriots could not direct another shot on goal.
FMU sophomore goalkeeper Casey Durham played the first half and made three saves, while senior Emily Brandenburg registered four stops over the final 45 minutes.
