Aynor's T.J. Johnson could only sit and watch as the South Carolina offensive line routinely failed to protect the quarterback or make holes in the running game. But now he's going to have a chance to make sure the Gamecocks don't have those same problems again.
The redshirt freshman is currently listed as a starter at right guard for the Gamecocks. Thanks to a great spring and summer, Johnson is listed ahead of junior Kevin Young on the depth chart.
But, Steve Spurrier says there's still plenty of competing going on. As many as 16 offensive lineman are in the fight for playing time, but multiple times he mentioned Johnson's name on Media Day Sunday, as a player that he's been impressed with this preseason.
Johnson says his strengths have been his work ethic and attitude. He says he just tries to follow the directions of coaches, and work with the other offensive linemen to improve. But he did say that the competition among the potential starters is "cutthroat."
At 6-4, 297 lbs, Johnson is the smallest of the projected starters on the offensive line, and gives up an inch and 13 pounds to Young.
