Through the first few days of Coastal Carolina practice, there's one player you just can't take your eyes off of. CCU TE David Duran stands 6'4", 240 lbs, and he may be the Chanticleers' most dependable receiver.
Duran transferred from Michigan State this offseason. The Spartans were going to turn the Georgia native into a primarily blocking tight end, and Duran wanted to go somewhere that he could catch the ball. He should definitely do that in the Chanticleer system, where he figures to be a go-to guy for quarterback Zach MacDowall.
"We met before the season because we both grew up in the same area," said the junior quarterback. "He's a great addition. I'm really excited about having him to throw to."
For Duran, there's been one thing in particular that's been hard for him to get used to in Conway.
"The one thing is the heat," said Duran. "I just need to get used to that. Honestly, everything else is not that different. Football is football."
Duran redshirted his first season at Michigan State, then made one catch his redshirt freshman year. So he still has three years of eligibility left. Coastal Carolina went through last year with the tight end a negligible part of their passing offense, especially after the expulsion of Scott Fambrough for a DUI arrest. Ironically enough, Duran will be wearing Fambrough's number (18) this year.
"I'm not putting too much pressure on myself," said Duran. "I'm just going to come out here and play and try to help the team win."
