Preseason Terrific 13 - #12 Carvers Bay Bears

»  Comments | Post a Comment

It's the end of an era at Carvers Bay, but the Bears hope it won't be the end of three straight trips to the state title game. Carvers Bay enters 2009 for the first time without a Geathers brother playing defensive line.

"I've had Robert, I've had Clifton and I've had Kwame, the Big Three," says Bears Head Coach Nate Thompson. "It's a little different, life without the Geathers."

The Bears will just have to settle for a cousin. Leading rusher Clayton Geathers returns to form a good one-two punch in both the offensive and defensive backfields with Davious Chestnut. The pair are attached at the hip, and have been recruited by some D-1 schools, but will most likely go somewhere they can play together.

Of course, the Bears will run the ball heavily on offense, led by Geathers, Chestnut and Tevin Richard, but Thompson believes that junior quarterback Desmond Grate can also throw the ball effectively.

On defensive line, junior Terrance Jenerette will look to replace Kwame Geathers, now a freshman at Georgia. Jenerette started alongside Kwame his sophomore year, and was active as teams tried to run to his side.

"He's coming back with a year of experience, stronger, and smarter." said Thompson. "He's going to be a force to be reckoned with."

Carvers Bay enters its 10th year as a program, and it has all ready reached four state title games, winning two. But in 2009, the Bears will have to do it without the brothers that helped to build the program.
