The Mullins Recreation Department had its annual opening day ceremonies this past Saturday, unveiling a number of little league baseball and softball teams.
Playing under a clear blue sky, 13 of 16 teams took the fields in exhibition play, providing family entertainment at the park on Gapway Street. Director Kenny Johnson said he is excited to start the season, although it takes a great deal of work.

Thanks to a parent committee, the park boasts a canteen loaded with food items and dedicated volunteer coaches. Focusing on the future, Johnson said he is encouraging participation from all kids in the area and parent support, too.

“This is the cheapest entertainment and it keeps kids active all year long. The recreation department is for everybody,” he said. “We got very good help from our coaches, and we always need more. That’s the backbone of this entire program,” he added. “Everything is built on volunteer support.”

The Badcock Furniture Mets and coach Jim Jackson, and the Dry Dock Mariners and coaches Lee White and Gil Fenters, display proper sportsmanship behavior after a game of T-ball.

Coaches Jason Brewer and Kay Webster rally their Dry Dock Pirates team in the dugout during an exhibition game at the Mullins Recreation Park.
