The Sumter Gamecocks narrowly nipped Hartsville Tuesday night in boys' prep soccer action 1-0.
Hartsville head coach Troy Alexander said the game had two distinct sides.
"It was a tale of two halves," the coach said. "The first half Sumter controlled the pace of the game and ran us all over the field. We could not mount any kind of attack of our own, and their counter attacks were relentless."
In the second half, Alexander said Hartsville dominated time of possession but was unable to get the ball into the goal.
Alexander noted the stellar play of Jamie Irick in the midfield. He also said Wil Atkinson was a force for Hartsville on the defensive side of the ball.
The team's record falls to 6-5 on the season and 1-4 in region play.
Hartsville will get more than a week of rest and will return to action on Tuesday, April 21, when they travel to Florence to face West Florence. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m.
