FLORENCE — It’s been a while since the Wilson softball team made any noise in Region 6-3A.
But on Tuesday, the Tigers took a small step in that direction.
Wilson’s 10-3 win over Lakewood marked the first region win for the Tigers in five years, with the last coming against Lakewood in 2002 according to coach Pete McCants.
“It was a relief for everyone,” McCants said. “The girls were happy and excited. It had been a while.”
Lauren Burt tossed a complete game and Brooke Moore drove in two runs in the victory.
“It’s great for the kids,” McCants said. “We’ve got a lot of girls who have been in this program for a couple years, so I know it was like a weight off of their shoulders.”
Despite the long losing streak, McCants said he had a feeling that Tuesday might be the day the Tigers broke through.
“We had a game recently against Marlboro County where we came back from 5-1 down to tie it in the fifth inning,” McCants said. “I knew if we played like that against Lakewood, we had a good chance since we only lost 2-1 earlier in the year.”
The win also marks a step in the right direction for the program and the team, McCants added.
“We showed a lot of heart,” he said. “We’ve been competitive, now we have to stay competitive.
“I think it shows what hard work can do. We’ve been last in the region for a lot of years, so this gives the girls something to shoot for.”
