Marion High is undefeated in region

The Marion High School Swamp Fox baseball team beat the Mullins High School Auctioneers 22 to 2 on Tuesday in Mullins. More game details will be forthcoming.

But on Monday night, the Swamp Foxes moved to 4-0 in the region when they topped Cheraw in a Region 8 AA showdown.

Going into the game, the two teams and their subsequent coaches, were each 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the region. Cheraw leadoff hitter Garrett Forman singled to be picked up by Aaron Miller. The Foxes fell behind 1-0 and would suffer through three scoreless innings. Emotions were high for both teams with former Marion head-coach Tony Boyer now in the Cheraw dugout calling pitches. A bang-bang double play fielded by Chase Lee in the top of the fourth sparked the Marion seniors to shake up their team-mates and the scoring onslaught began.

Justin Brock led off in the bottom of the fourth with a single. Jonathan Elliott did likewise. Martin Gasque sacrificed to take the "goose egg" off of the board. The game was tied. While not twins, (Ross and Russ) the White brothers had a matching pair of singles and Chase Lee drew a walk.

The next at bat was dramatic. Justin Elvis, the kid almost too small to make Coach Boyer’s 2008 squad, strode to the plate and launched a three-run homer to deep right center. The Foxes left the fourth inning with six runs, all they would need.

Ross White showed maturity to survive a fifth inning scare, conceding two more Cheraw runs. Justin Gause strode to the mound in the seventh and Ross White took his place in left.

Gause came in to shut the door on the Braves. Ross White had his back, fielding a deep shot into left for the first out. With two runners on, watching helplessly, Gause struck out the last two batters. The Swamp Foxes are the only undefeated team in the region.

While the defense was nearly flawless, base running errors, fielding technique and situational choices could have reversed the outcome of the game. Coach Donald Cribb was appreciative of the effort, but said he knows that work on the team goal of a championship has only just begun.
