Following what felt like another tropical storm, the Creek Bridge Warriors played host to Mullins this past Friday night just hours after a storm brought strong winds and enough rain to saturate the field.
The result was a slow start on a slow track as both team defenses forced punts and turnovers throughout the two opening quarters."I think Creek Bridge did a great job and both teams played hard," Mullins coach Ron Lanham said. Fumble recoveries from Warriors defensive lineman Charles Green and the Aucs Stephen Singleton seemed to set the tone. The game came down to the ability to run the football effectively and stopping the run defensively, which Mullins got away with in a 21-0 victory. "We really needed to establish our runnig game," Lanham said. "We knew it was going to be a sloppy track, we went back to what the kids feel comfortable with."
Running back Timothy Grant’s 55-yard highlight run didn’t result in a scoring drive to start the second quarter.
Mullins took over midway through the quarter on the strength of big gain runs from George Page, Antron Smith and Bobby Crawford. Smith got on the board at the 5:31 mark with a 15 yard run, while Page added the two-point conversion. Page would later add another 15-yard scamper along with Jeremy Legette making the point after kick, giving the squad a 15-0 advantage at the 3:20 mark.
Auctioneer safety Sequan McFarland ended the ensuing drive with a one-handed interception returned 55-yards downfield. Grant answered immediately, picking off the ricocheted pass on the very next play. However, McFarland ended the first half with another interception, this time he dashed for an exhausting 95 yards, weaving through traffic towards the end zone as if he was being propelled by the hands of someone holding a “Playstation 3” controller in his hands.
A holding call on the return negated the touchdown.
Quarterback Bobby Crawford provided the game’s final score with a 4-yard touchdown run in the closing minute of the third quarter.
Mullins looks to have everyone back at full strength, especially on the defensive end. Linebacker and running back Chris Williamson rejoined the team after recovering from a foot injury, and three starters return to the unit. The Aucs will need a strong defensive effort against defending 2A state champion and new region foe Cheraw. "We're going to have to have a supreme effort," Lanham said, adding that his kids know what it's going to take to contend, and are well aware of the program they're going to be up against.
