Starting with the good news: Brittany Applewhite was crowned Mullins High School’s 2008 homecoming queen. Faith Aiken was first runner-up and Jeriah Grant was second runner-up.
This was good news not only because basketball star Applewhite was sporting the crown, but also the Auctioneers were holding a 14-10 lead over the North Myrtle Beach Chiefs at half-time. Former coach Denver Cromer’s vaunted offense was having trouble getting off the ground, but in the end, they managed to pull off a 37-14 victory.
Sophomore quarterback Bobby Crawford bombed a 50-yard pass downfield to wide receiver Sequan McFarland down to the North Myrtle Beach 27 yard line. Mullins was successful in their opening drive, as Crawford found the seam, connecting with Jeremy Leggette on a 24-yard touchdown pass, giving them a 6-0 lead at the 9:03 mark.
Jamal Young’s run stuffing tackling forced a turnover on downs near midfield on the Chiefs ensuing drive. Young finished with nine tackles in the game. Defensive lineman Antonio Anderson has been a terror in the opponent’s backfield all season, and was a key contributor applying pressure on North Myrtle Beach quarterback Daniel Smith.
The Aucs forced a fumble, and Keyon Rogers forced a three and out with a tackle for a 5-yard loss, thwarting two deep drives to start the second quarter. Crawford struck again, finding man-to-man coverage on McFarland and connecting with a 70-yard touchdown pass.
Crawford ran in the two-point conversion, and Mullins was on an emotional high in the game’s first 15 minutes. However, superstar wide receiver Heath Jackson and the North Myrtle Beach offense got in rhythm with screen passes and draw plays for running backs Dexter Green and Jermaine Vereen.
Zach Crowl added an 18-yard field goal, and Jackson ended the first half with a 4-yard touchdown reception, one of eight catches in the half.
Both Lanham and Cromer’s squads waged war through the air, and the match-up between McFarland and Jackson was looking good as advertised. Jackson racked up 97 yards and touchdown in the first half. Crawford had already thrown 153 yards. McFarland had 120 yards receiving along with his two touchdown receptions.
