The Emmanuel Christian School has gotten its soccer season in to full swing. The team got off to a rough start at 0-4 due to some of the team leaders graduating, but they picked up their first win of the season on Thursday, Sept. 11 as they defeated Sumter Christian 4-2.
Sophomore Jarred Carmona led the team with two goals. He was assisted by junior Tre’ Atkinson and senior Josh Kelly, according to coach Ross Barnhardt.
Eight-grader Justin Felder was in goal for the Crusaders for the first half.
Barnhardt said Felder made some good saves, but two goals were out of reach. Barnhardt responded by placing Tre’ Atkinson in goal.
“Our defense was excellent in the second half from juniors Bradley Gainey, Jon Byars and eighth-grader Andrew Byars,” Barnhardt said Friday. “Senior Blake Courtney and sophomore Eddie Hilton did a good job controlling the ball and putting pressure on the opponent's ball.”
The Crusders fell to Grace Christian Academy on Friday by a score of 9-4. One bright spot for the Crusaders, however, was eighth-grader Tyler Rogers, who scored all four goals for the team.
The team will start conference pay on Sept. 23, as it plays host to Maranatha Christian.
