The Pelicans suffered their worst loss in one of their most important games of the season. Potomac dominated the Pelicans in game one of the Mills Cup Championship series en route to a 15-0 drubbing at BB&T Coastal Field. It was the Pelicans most lopsided loss of the season.
Potomac plated six runs in the fourth and five runs in the sixth to pull away from the Birds.
The P-Nats were ushered to an early lead partly due to an error by Pelicans third baseman Eric Campbell to begin the first. Later in the inning, Dee Brown singled home Dan Lyons to give Potomac a 1-0 lead.
After tacking on a lone run in the third, Potomac put the game out of reach in the fourth. Ernesto Mejia committed an error on a grounder by Michael Burgess to open the inning. Two batters later, Dan Lyons hit a sacrifice fly to center field to give the P-Nats a 2-0 lead. Michael Martinez followed with an RBI single. Then, Andrew Lefave hit an RBI double. After Dee Brown walked, Francisco Plasencia clobbered a three-run homer off reliever Jaye Chapman to give Potomac an 8-0 lead.
The P-Nats buried the Pelicans in the sixth inning. Potomac loaded the bases for Michael Burgess, who took the first pitch from new pitcher Michael Broadway and hammered it off the home clubhouse roof to give them a 13-0 lead.
Pelicans starter Scott Diamond did not have his best stuff as he managed just 3.2 innings. He allowed seven hits and seven runs, only one of which was earned.
