The South Carolina High School League continued its investigation Tuesday into the brawl between football teams from Wilson and Lake City high schools.
The fight, which involved nearly every player from both teams, broke out immediately following Lake City’s 19-12 upset of the defending 3A state champions Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.
SCHSL commissioner Jerome Singleton said early Tuesday afternoon the league has met with representatives from both schools, but he is “waiting on more information” before making a decision on any disciplinary action.
Dru Nix, SCHSL associate commissioner, said a decision should be reached later in the week.
“We’re still in fact-finding mode,” she said.
League officials are hoping video footage of the fight eventually surfaces. Right now, all they have are written statements from both teams, Singleton said.
Lake City coach Justin Gentry said Tuesday afternoon the Panthers are not practicing.
“(We’re) trying to get things sorted out,” Gentry said.
Attempts to reach Wilson coach Darryl Page have been unsuccessful, but Wilson athletic director Kevin Hawkins said Tuesday the Tigers are practicing as usual.
It is unclear how the brawl began or who started it, but several players sucker-punched others who were on the ground, and some used their helmets to beat opposing players.
No arrests have been made, but the Florence County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with both school districts to determine if any action should be taken, Sheriff Kenney Boone said.
Wilson’s game against South Florence has been rescheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday because of the threat of Tropical Storm Hanna.
Lake City is scheduled to host East Clarendon at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
