The youngsters will be playing throughout the year, and are on the fast track to stardom after a successful second place finish in their first tournament a couple weeks ago, winning three out four games.
The Mullins Razors team of 9-year-olds comes from Mullins, Lake View Dillon and Green Sea Floyds. Felder a principal at Marion Intermediate School, was once the coach of the Mullins varsity baseball team, leading the squad to a state championship in 2000.
McDaniels said the team’s top six batters posted averages ranging from .425 to .625, along with 16 strikeouts from their pitcher. The Razors also play in the United States Specialty Sports Association Baseball league, which offers programs for four levels of play. The young sluggers said their first tournament event was good and the team play was awesome.
Felder said there are a lot of good baseball players on the team and McDaniels said the squad hopes to take part in at least one tournament each month.
The coaches said they feel that the experience provides opportunities for improvement and that a number of the players are pretty advanced already.
“Utility man,” Matt Stordy, just finished off the cake, celebrating his eighth birthday, joining the Razors team as a 7-year-old.
“We have a pretty good team all the way around. We’re fortunate to have really good pitching and hitting,” McDaniels said, adding that the squad is ranked among the top in the state.
The Mullins Razors consists of right fielder Timmy Felder, left fielder Payton Cox, center fielder Diante Bridgett, second baseman Matt Stordy, first baseman Garrett McDaniels, pitcher Andrew McRae, pitcher Nick Collins, catcher D.J. Atkinson, shortstop Reagan Fowler, home run hitting third baseman Jordan Hyatt, left fielder Hayden Danos and shortstop Drake Adams.
