In the quarter of a century that he's led the Conway Tigers, Chuck Jordan cannot remember how many region titles he's won. But it's impossible to forget the number of state titles that he's brought home. So as the Tigers prepare to play the Fighting Gamecocks of Sumter on Friday for the region championship, you can forgive Jordan if he has bigger things on his mind.
"To be honest, it's not a big deal," Jordan says of the region title, "we've won plenty of region titles since we've been here. What it really boils down to is playoff position."
Both Sumter and Conway come into Friday's game 8-1, and 3-0 in the region. So even though both teams have another game to play after this one, the winner of this game will win the league title. Such was the case last year as well in this showdown, and the Gamecocks took down the Tigers 27-13 in Sumter.
The Conway players understand that while the region championship might not be a big deal, winning this game still is. Offensive guard Erskine Johnson said it was important because it will prove they can play with some of the best teams in AAAA, and therefore show they can make a deep run in the playoffs.
Because that's what it is all about in Conway. With four state runnerups in the last decade, the Tigers are using this game to get them ready for something much bigger then just a region championship.
