After completing an undefeated regular season with 14 wins and 0 losses, the Carolina Academy Girls Varsity Tennis Team just added 3 playoff matches to the "WIN" column to complete a perfect record for their season, and to claim the 2008 SCISA State Championship. In early round action, the Lady Bobcats won their first playoff match at home against Kings Academy by a score of 9-0.
Rain postponed Friday's semifinal round to Saturday, which meant the Bobcats had to win back to back matches in one afternoon at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter. The Bobcats didn't seem bothered by the fact that they had never played two team matches in one day, and had never played under lights, as they won two hard fought matches in the semifinal and final rounds of play. In the semis and the finals, the Bobcats lost their #1 (Lauren Reddeck) and #2 (Sonovia Bradshaw) singles matches, but won their #3 (Ali Courtney), #4 (Taylor Osborne), #5 (Rebecca Weaver), and #6 (Tori Osborne) singles matches. Going into doubles action, the Bobcats needed only one win out of the 3 doubles matches. In the semifinals, Taylor Osborne and Rebecca Weaver, playing in the #3 doubles position, claimed the first doubles win, and so the remaining two doubles matches were suspended to allow the Bobcats time to prepare for the final round of play. When the #1 doubles match was suspended, Lauren Reddeck and Ali Courtney were up 5-1. When the #2 doubles match was suspended, Sonovia Bradshaw and Tori Osborne were up 5-2.
After an hour break, the Lady Bobcats went right back out on the courts to face Colleton Prep in the championship match. The Bobcats repeated their earlier performance with 4 impressive wins at #3 through #6 singles, but losses in the top 2 positions. Once again, the Bobcats needed to win just one of their three doubles matches to claim the state title. And once again, Taylor Osborne and Rebecca Weaver managed to come up with that all-important team win #5 to secure the victory for the Carolina Academy netters.
The Carolina Academy tennis team had 4 players to remain undefeated throughout their season in singles action: Ali Courtney, Taylor Osborne, Tori Osborne, and Rebecca Weaver. The Lady Bobcats are led by team captains Lauren Reddeck and Ali Courtney. Reddeck played #1 for the Bobcats throughout the season. Courtney, who was sidelined with a knee injury for 3 matches late in the season, returned to the starting line-up just in time for the state playoffs. Four junior varsity players split their playing time between varsity and junior varsity matches as needed throughout the season: Rebecca Weaver, Haley Hancock, Haven Brown, and Harula Paraschos. The Bobcats are coached by Jenny Johnson and Deb Osborne.
Prior to the playoffs, The Carolina Academy defeated The King's Academy 9-0 Wednesday, Oct. 22 at The Carolina Academy.
