Amidst all the success of the Myrtle Beach football team in the recent years, a lob shot away resides the most successful home court advantage on the beach. Where the lady Seahawks tennis team dominates and displays no love for their opponent.
“Of course football and basketball get most of the attention,” said Coach Rivers Lynch. “But our students expect us to win.”
Winning is synonymous with Myrtle Beach tennis. Since Lynch took over the program in 1989, the Seahawks have won 14 AAA state championships, including five state titles in the past seven years. But last season the lady Seahawks failed to make it to the state title match for the first time in the new millennium.
“We have to pick it up the legacy, because we won states almost every year for the last fifteen years,” said Senior Allison Flynn.
Every year maybe overstating it, but that is the expectation on the beach. At 13-1 this season the Hawks are ready to reclaim what they believe is rightfully theirs.
“We’re expected to win, we always have a big target on our back,” said Junior Jordan Lazarus. “But if we lose, we don’t hang our heads; we just get right back up and win the next time out.”
“They’re all kind of scared of us, but that makes us play down to their level,” said Junior Olivia Elswick. “Instead of playing to our full potential, and if we do I believe we will win the state championship.”
Exuding with confidence and maintaining the pedigree to back it up, the lady Seahawks believe adding another state championship trophy can only match the precedent set before them.
“The ladies in the 1990’s got it started, hopefully we can continue many more.”
