Prep Notebook: Bulldogs dealing with inconsistency issues

»  Comments | Post a Comment

For the second time this season, Marlboro County was dealt a tough loss.

After falling short against Conway earlier, the Bulldogs lost to Region 6-3A foe Crestwood Friday by a score of 38-35.

The Bulldogs fell behind 12-0 early and trailed into the third quarter before a furious comback to take the lead. But Marlboro could not maintain the advantage.

The same situation happened against Conway where Marlboro took 14-9 lead into the half before Conway scored 15 points in the third quarter and held on for the win.

“In a quarter and a half against Crestwood, we scored 29 points,” Marlboro coach Dean Boyd said. “When we want to, we can compete with any team in the state. But there are times during the game where we’ll be really good and then really bad.”

Boyd attributed it to an inconsistency in practice and failure to transition over to games what’s been learned in practice.

But there is a silver lining, Boyd hopes.

“In the past, I think we’ve peaked early and then went home in the playoffs after a game or so,” he said. “I’m hoping we can continue to improve and correct our mistakes and maybe our best football is ahead of us this year.”

Not the record you want

The Dillon Wildcats set a new team record last week against Mullins — for penalties.

Dillon’s 17 penalties against the Auctioneers were two more than the 15 the Wildcats posted against South Florence in 1994.

The Wildcats also set a team record for number of yards penalized with 140. The old record was 122 against North Myrtle Beach in 2002.

Terrific trio

East Clarendon back Elbert McFadden has been running wild the last three weeks.

McFadden has posted rushing totals of 144, 324 and 214 yards in the Wolverines’ last three games with a combined eight touchdowns.

Players of the week

  • Lake City’s Shon Carson rushed 19 times for 263 yards and three touchdowns in Monday’s win against St. James to earn offensive player of the week.
  • Lamar’s BJ Goodson had six tackles, a sack and forced a fumble in a win against Scott’s Branch to earn defensive player of the week.
